Meet our Ambassadors
Shaan Dulay - Young Ambassador
Hello I’m Shaan Dulay, I’m 9 years old and I live in Wallsall. I’m so honored and pleased to be the Trust’s first ever Young Ambassador!
I have a great passion for our planet. In my spare time I love to read up about environmental issues as well as taking an active role in participating in local and national environmental events to help wildlife and nature.
I currently run an Eco Blog to help make children as well as adults aware of what is happening on our planet. My blog gives information on how we all as individuals can make small changes that will lead to big changes for our environment and our climate.
You can also follow me on my social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram, which my mum helps me run - @ecoshaan
You can safely say I am a keen Young Environmentalist!
Why I wanted to be a Young Ambassador
I’m dedicated to making a difference for the environment and want to play an active role, if not lead to implementing these changes.
I believe it is so important to learn about the environment at school and within the community –young people can’t be expected to be interested and protect the planet if they have not learnt why it is so important for our survival of our world. The environment affects us all and we all should be educated in how these changes affect us and what we can do to help change. I personally feel we should have a lesson a week where it is a compulsory lesson like P.E. where we connect with nature and have a lesson outdoors. Being in fresh air and nature makes you appreciate what you have and think about these issues. You cannot learn about all this just sitting in a classroom, there must be some form of practical side to it.
Humans for far too long have caused damage to our planet, it is now time to educate the youth as they are the future and can help reverse damage that has occurred. By damaging the earth humans have damaged themselves. As my blog states – ‘if we don’t act now and wait for others it will be too late’.
I’m looking forward to meeting new people with similar outlooks through The Trust who want to drive change for our planet.
Making a difference
At School: Last year during lockdown I contacted my headmaster about setting up an eco-committee at our school. I prepared a PowerPoint and met the school heads to explain why our school should become an eco-school. I also sent this PowerPoint to Sir David Attenborough who wrote back to me and gave me positive feedback on the work I was trying to achieve at our school. I also received a signed photo and book from my hero. How cool was that!!! I have been the driving force behind our school’s eco-committee and making necessary changes to our school.
Our school is linked to an international chain of schools (over 85 schools), therefore one of my aims is for all these schools to adopt similar actions for their schools which I am trying to implement at my school. I am currently leading our school’s eco-committee where we are following the Eco-Schools Programme. I play an active role in making all the children as well as teachers aware of what climate issues are happening currently and local /national events that we can all participate in. I am currently advocating for our school to go ‘Meat Free’ on Monday’s. With the dream that all schools in the future may adopt this concept. The carbon footprint that we could reduce by just cutting out meat from school dinners on a Monday would be phenomenal!
Near home: I am also campaigning currently with my local MP about air pollution around schools. One of the things I am trying to campaign for is a clean air framework to be implemented around schools.
I help clean the local nature reserve from any litter that has been thrown there and I am also in the process of bringing to life any abandoned spaces at the nature reserve by planting wildflowers.
Fundraising: I recently took part in the Big Wild Walk to fundraise for the Trust with my family by walking or cycling 30km in one week and I raised over £180.
Could you be an Ambassador for the Trust?
Do you love wildlife? Would you like to help us work for a wilder Birmingham and the Black Country? Are you a voice for the natural world that needs to be heard? Then get in touch and see if we can work together!
