A GREAT Bog Adventure...
Some of the wooden sculptures could previously be found in the reserve however they have been hidden from view by vegetation, this has been cleared so their beauty can be seen again. Wildlife Trust Senior Conservation Officer Tom Hartland Smith has created new sculptures from reclaimed wood found around the site. Made with just a chainsaw the detail on wildlife sculptures like the Butterfly, Newt and Dragonfly is incredible.
Reserve Officer Natalie Norton from the Wildlife Trust has been working with the Friends of Moseley Bog and local volunteers to increase access around the site with new boardwalks. Tesco Bags of Help and Veolia Environmental Trust have funded the improved access, boardwalks and sculptures. Their next challenge is to improve the water pollution levels to improve habitats for native plants and wildlife. Local community volunteers will be taught to monitor the water pollution levels through freshwater surveys of invertebrates like dragonfly larvae and freshwater shrimp. As the pollution levels decline they hope to see thriving colonies of newts and rare plant species like sphagnum that create the bog itself.
An A4 map showing all the walkways and access points as well as the sculptures, old and new, can be downloaded and printed below - can you find them all?
